Every person transpires during his sleep. Of course, some Trans pirate something more than others. Mattresses have to process this moisture over and over again. If a mattress is not regularly ventilated, it will smell unpleasant after a while. That’s why you should turn your mattress from time to time and air. Highly sweaty people choose a well-breathing mattress best. Polyether core mattresses are not so suitable in this case. It is better to opt for viscos-elastic, latex – or – ideally – cold foam mattresses. These mattresses have an open cell structure and breathe better.

Body weight:

The higher the body weight, the faster a mattress wears out. People with a higher body weight choose a not too soft mattress, because then you sink too deep, which is bad for the sleeping position.

People weighing less than 100 kg can sleep on almost any mattress. If you weigh between 85 and 100 kg it is better to opt for ‘hard’ mattresses.

People who weigh more than 100 kg are best advised not to use viscos-elastic, latex, bonell or pocket spring mattresses. Better is a polyether core mattress (hard), but especially recommended are our cold foam mattresses (egg Megaspore Excellence hard) and pocket spring mattresses with the special honeycomb pocket springs such as solid mattress or a Quartz 2.0.

Soft or hard mattress:

For most mattresses you can choose either a soft or hard mattress. This decision depends on your personal preference. Do you prefer a bit harder or do you prefer to sink a bit into the mattress?

A hard mattress has a harder core. The life of these mattresses is thus on average slightly longer. People over 85 kg are better off with a ‘hard’ variant.

Soft mattresses include latex mattresses or pocket spring mattresses with latex padding or pocket spring mattresses with viscous foam padding.

Hard mattresses are cold foam mattresses and pocket spring mattresses with cold foam upholstery.

Back or muscle pain:

An unsuitable mattress can cause back or muscle pain. To avoid this it is very important that you choose a mattress that supports your body well and evenly. The more pressure points, the smoother the support. The division into comfort zones (egg the 7-zone mattress) promotes optimal body support. Especially the shoulders and hips must be able to sink slightly deeper into the mattress, in order to obtain an even pressure distribution. Viscos-elastic, cold foam, pocket spring and latex mattresses fit your body best.

Lifetime mattress:

Regular use of the mattress extends the life span. A mattress wears off faster if you are always on the same side. The lifetime is also heavily dependent on the body weight of the user. The less you weigh, the longer you can use your mattress.

On average, you can use a mattress for 10 years. This average also depends on the quality of the mattress. The most durable mattresses are the Bonell spring mattresses and then the pocket spring mattresses. Polyether core mattresses are most prone to cavitation. Even viscos-elastic mattresses (NASA foam) should be changed after 10 years to retain the optimum spring force.

Often, several materials are used to make a mattress. Pocket springs with polyether, latex, cold foam or viscos foam padding. Viscos-elastic mattresses (NASA foam) with inner cores of polyether or cold foam.

Anti-allergic, anti-dust mites:

Most mattresses have anti-allergic covers with an anti-mite effect. This is not always the case with cheap mattresses. Many problems with allergies or dust mites are caused by poor ventilation or care of the mattress.

A mattress is by far the most important element of your sleeping comfort. 80 to 90 percent of your sleeping comfort is determined by the mattress. The mattress support supports the mattress and is therefore of less importance than the mattress.

Bed slats:

  • Slatted frames provide the mattress with good support and a long life.
  • They are a bit heavier in sleeping comfort than box springs.

Several factors determine the quality of a slatted frame: the rubbers where the slats hang, the number of slats of a grate (general: the more, the better). It is best not to buy a slatted frame where the slats are farther apart than the pocket springs of the mattress. Then the pocket springs are not supported by slats everywhere.

  • Slatted frames are less prone to dust and dirt than box springs.
  • Slatted frames have comfort zones that can be adjusted in hardness.
  • Slatted frames are usually cheaper and have a longer life.

Box springs:

Box springs offer a very good support of the mattress. Their life is shorter than that of a good slatted base.

A box spring with Bonell springs is a little less stable (springs a bit more – hotel bed feeling). Box springs with pocket springs are more stable and have more pressure points, which translates into better support.

Advantages of box springs over slatted frames:

  • Box springs are nice and flat. The slats of the slatted frames are slightly arched, so you sometimes have the feeling, you roll to the side or to the middle of the bed. Box springs do not have that feeling.
  • Box springs are thicker than slatted frames and give the bed a higher lying position. So you get comfortable in or out of bed.
  • Box springs are also more elastic than slatted frames, so the mattress adapts better to the body profile.


If you place a high-quality mattress on a high-quality slatted frame or box spring, many consumers will not feel the difference between slatted frame and box spring.
